Our ministry to children occurs through participating in the local Open the Bible performances. Open the Bible is a team representing the churches in Coggeshall. During term time we visit St. Peter’s Church of England Primary School most Wednesday afternoons to act out a story from the Bible to a school assembly.
We are affiliated to the Bible Society and comply with their safeguarding regulations, as well as those of the Diocese.
Open the Bible is a three-year rolling programme. We are in our third year. We write our own dramas. Based on the work of the Bible Society, each of mini-drama lasts between 8 -10 minutes.
Each half term has a different theme. We started in year 1 with The Creation, Adam and Eve, through Noah, Abraham, Joseph and Moses. Since then we have moved to grouping of stories such as “The First Christians, “Trusting God,” and “Children play their Part.” Additionally, just before the school breaks up for Christmas and Easter we present a seasonal offering.
Mindful of the fact that we are addressing children as young as 4 and as old as 11, we use a lot of visual effects. Our fantastic wardrobe designer makes an array of period costume (with a little help from friends) and keeps them clean and pressed. We also have a props designer who constructed a range of props as diverse as a temple down to a scroll and quill pen—with many other pieces complementing our performances.
Open the Bible involves the children as much as possible. Some weeks between 4 and 10 children join us for non-speaking parts in the drama. At other times the whole school join in with a simple repetitive phrase or sound.
We are a small but very enthusiastic team that gain so much from the children.
